You’ve got a great website, you’ve created unique content and your product is the first in the market. You might think that sales and enquiries should be flooding in, but they’re not.

Google gets over 100 billion searches a month worldwide, so it’s important to remember Search Engine Optimisation plays a huge part of any web development. If you’re new to the world of digital marketing and don’t know what SEO is, then this article will help.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, the practice of driving organic traffic to a website through keywords and unique content.

There are various ways to increase your visibility in search engines, and these include:

  • Keyword optimised content
  • Pay-per-Click (PPC) advertising
  • Create unique, shareable content
  • Update the metadata

With so many practices available, it can be hard to know where to start. For more information on how to improve your rankings, why not take a look at these SEO tips and tricks for beginners.

Why do you need SEO?

A website that hasn’t been optimised for Search Engines is the same as having a shop down a dark alley, with the lights turned off. You know you exist, but your customers don’t.

Think about it, physical shops have specific opening times, and (most) shut over bank holidays. Your website is open 24/7, 365 days a year. Investing the time to properly optimise your site means you have near constant promotion, ideal if you have products or services to sell.

It’s most common for web users to not click through numerous pages of search results, so any work that can be put into optimising a site to rank on page one is always beneficial. One of the ways that marketers and businesses can achieve this is through SEO content.

SEO Content

There are so many different types of online content that you can create for SEO-purpose it can be hard to know where to start. SEO content can include:

  • Blog posts. These should be relevant to your industry, and contain at least one focus keyword. For example, when writing about content marketing, your focus keyword might be content marketing strategy.
  • Product pages. These are the bread and butter of any ecommerce website. As each product should have its own description, this helps with ensuring all content is unique.
  • These are large-format images that contain large amounts of data, which are often displayed in charts for clarity. These can contribute to an increase in site traffic, especially if the reader shares with their social media contacts.
  • News articles. These news articles can relate to company updates, press releases and “Meet the Team” posts. They’re similar in style to magazine or newspaper articles.

The world of SEO is ever changing, but it’s never going to disappear. Search engines are constantly updating their algorithms, so it’s important to understand the basics before you launch a new website or online business.
